Shanghai Stuff Etiquette
With a population of 20 million, and well over 100,000 foreigners,
Shanghai is one of the most populated and international cities in all
of China. Shanghai Stuff is this city’s premier social networking tool
and aims to help its members, both locals and expatriates, connect
with each other.
Members are encouraged to communicate with each other, but be nice!
Here are a few ground rules for participation in Shanghai Stuff.
Respect the privacy of others. Don’t post personal information about
another member, or information that could compromise another member’s
reputation or safety. If you must gossip, keep it private.
Be civil. You may disagree with others, but don’t forget your
manners. Most likely you wouldn’t show hostility in person, so
don’t do it online either. Be respectful and don’t purposely
upset another member.
Keep your posts relevant. If someone starts a discussion about one
topic and you steer it toward another, that’s known as “hijacking,”
and it’s rude. If you must go off-topic in a discussion, wait until
others have made a few relevant replies first.
Don’t abuse the newbies. It may be tempting, but remember you were new
once, and you made friends with people who welcomed you. Instead of
intimidating or making fun of new members, help them feel at home on
Shanghai Stuff.
Be yourself. Don’t pretend to be someone else by creating multiple
accounts or using a photo of someone else. You’re beautiful just
the way you are. If you misrepresent yourself and use false
information, you’re a big fat liar.
Don’t spam. Use the Events section to promote your event. Use the
Classifieds if you have something to sell. Consider purchasing ad
space. Do not use Blogs, Groups, comments or anything else. Spamming
is grounds for immediate account suspension.
We also have a couple rules that we need to enforce to appease the local
Net Nanny. No nude photos. No politically sensitive content.
Thanks for your understanding and helping to keep Shanghai Stuff
accessible.
Keeping these tips in mind may improve your experience on Shanghai Stuff
and save someone else’s sanity.
Report an issue! You may not like ratting someone out,
but remember you are helping the community by reporting the bad
people who harass or spam others. The worst thing you can do is stoop
to their level and retaliate, which never helps a situation. Report
them instead.
Try to be forgiving. If you’ve filed a complaint about another
member, please understand that we generally give a warning on a first
offense and remind the member of our ground rules. Immediate
suspensions however do happen in more serious cases.
Configure your privacy settings. If you want, you can moderate
comments on your content, or have your profile viewable only to
friends.
Check the category. When you start a new discussion or post a
classified ad, make sure you’re posting in the right place.
Type in caps sparingly. TYPING LIKE THIS is considered shouting, and
to many it’s just as annoying as shouting in real life.
Encourage new members to participate. It’s great that you’ve made
friends here. Help new members and lurkers do the same!
